South East Stoney Trail

South East Stoney Trail is a 25 km highway segment forming part of Calgary’s larger 70 km ring road. The project includes the design, build, finance, operation, and maintenance of the road, which features nine interchanges, one road flyover, two rail flyovers, and 27 bridge structures.

Operational since 2013, the concession runs until 2043, with availability payments from the Province of Alberta.

The highway enhances accessibility, reduces congestion, and supports Alberta’s long-term transportation and economic goals.

Sustainability

• The project added 15,000 tonnes of fiber-reinforced asphalt into the major rehabilitation program of 2023 that not only improved pavement durability but also reduced the required materials contributing to environmental sustainability. Such reduction in required materials plus the extension of the pavement’s life cycle helped lower the carbon emissions associated with asphalt production and the overall environmental impact of extraction, transportation and transformation of oil and gravel into bitumen.
• The full LED lighting conversion was completed in Q2 2025, one year ahead of schedule.
• In 2025, Chinook Roads Partnership also installed an on-site beehive as part of a “Save the Bees” initiative, with the first honey received in Q3 2025.
• The asset also supported local community organisations through donations, including C$5,000 to the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society and C$5,000 to the Tsuut’ina First Nation Healing Lodge.
