Kicking Horse Canyon
The Kicking Horse Canyon project spans the Rocky Mountains between British Columbia and Alberta and involves upgrade of 6 km of the Kicking Horse, including a new 400 m bridge constructed on 90 m high columns.
In addition to this engineering feat, the project includes the operation and maintenance of a 26 km section of highway through the Pass. The route, which has been operational since 2007 and will run until 2030, enhances safety and mobility on one of the most technically demanding corridors in the province.
The project improves traffic flow, safety, and freight efficiency for approx. 70,000 daily users.
Sustainability
The project integrates substantial environmental enhancements. Over 8,000m² of riparian and 2,000 m² of in-stream habitat were created and 6,000 new trees were planted.
A 3km section of the old highway was decommissioned and repurposed as recreational trails, demonstrating a strong commitment to ecological restoration and public benefit.

Awards / Recognitions
- The Kicking Horse Canyon Project, specifically Phase 2, was recognized with the Premier’s Award in Innovation and Excellence (Innovation category) in 2007.
- It also received an Award of Merit in the Financing category from the CCPPP National Awards for Innovation and Excellence in 2006.
