Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route
The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route is a major transport infrastructure project involving the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of 59 km of road infrastructure around Aberdeen, Scotland’s third-largest city.
The project includes 12 km of upgrades to the existing A90 and 47 km of new dual carriageway creating a complete bypass from Balmedie in the north to Stonehaven and Charleston in the south. This strategic route diverts heavy goods vehicles and through-traffic around Aberdeen city center.
Delivered under Scotland’s non-profit distributing (NPD) PPP model, construction began in 2015 with phased openings completed by 2019. The route significantly improves journey reliability for both local and long-distance traffic while reducing congestion in Aberdeen’s residential areas.
Sustainability
The route was designed to relieve congestion and reduce heavy goods vehicle through Aberdeen by bypassing the city centre and avoiding the Bridge of Dee.
It has improved journey reliability and reduced vehicle emissions near residentials areas, including those around the Aberdeen Airport.
