The John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project is a brownfield hydroelectric project located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It involved the design, build, finance, maintenance and rehabilitation of a new 138MW facility to replace the ageing 1947 station.

The modern facility includes three-turbine 46 MW generating unit underground powerhouse, 2.1 km of water passage tunnels, and a water bypass system to protect fish habitat.

Operational in 2019, the station supplies clean, reliable electricity to over 80,000 homes while supporting flood control, domestic water supply and recreation needs in the Campbell River region.

Sustainability

The project integrates environmental protection through its water bypass system, which ensures adequate flow for fish populations downstream. By replacing an older, less efficient facility, the new station delivers improved energy efficiency and significantly reduces environmental risks.

The project contributes to British Columbia’s renewable energy targets by supplying low-emission, hydroelectric power.
