Beneath the north approach viaduct of the Golden Ears Bridge, an unoccupied space now houses a managed bee yard. Established in 2025, the initiative gives land within the bridge corridor a practical new use and provides a sheltered location for local beekeeping.
In 2025, the Golden Ears Bridge team identified a new use for an available area beneath the bridge deck. The space was adapted to create a dedicated bee yard for managed honey bee colonies.
Sheltered by the bridge above and enclosed by an electric perimeter fence, the yard provides a protected setting for the hives. Photographs taken following installation show the colonies established in their new location.
The completed bee yard demonstrates how existing space around transport infrastructure can be thoughtfully repurposed for a practical environmental initiative.
